Consumer Research
We interview and survey buyers in established neighbourhoods and in Salt Lake–New Town, including how Bengali-language media and festival spending change brand choice.
Separate old-city value seeking from new-town growth
Kolkata is both a price-aware historic market and a growing office city. Salt Lake, New Town, and Sector V do not shop, rent, or hire the way Park Street, Howrah, or the older northern neighbourhoods do.
Manufacturing, the port, education, and a large public-sector presence still shape spending. At the same time, IT and commercial development in the east have created a newer professional consumer.
Real Plan Consulting studies those two Kolkatas separately, so a launch, a campus, or a store is sized to the catchment it will actually serve.

Value consciousness is real in Kolkata, and so is aspiration in the new townships. Treating the city as one income band hides both. Festival calendars, joint-family buying, and a strong local-language media market also change how brands are judged.
Howrah and the river crossings add a geography problem: a site’s true catchment is often on both banks, limited by bridge and commute time rather than by distance on a map.
Useful research here makes clear:

A mall, hospital, college, or factory extension in Kolkata has to survive a value-seeking core market. We test whether the revenue case holds in that context.
Park Street, Sector V, and Howrah answer different location questions. We look at:
Local retailers and institutions often have deeper trust than a new national brand. We map that gap before a positioning or price is fixed.
Demand is estimated for a neighbourhood or township, not as one Kolkata total, so a price-sensitive market is not mistaken for a thin one.
Kolkata’s research brief usually sits in the industries that have long anchored the city, plus the newer office economy.
Those include:
An IT campus in Sector V and a value retail format in Howrah should not share a questionnaire.
Market research is not simply about collecting data. It is about converting information into actionable insights.
Our approach combines:
In Kolkata, the useful split is old-city value seeking versus Salt Lake, New Town, and Sector V growth.
Common questions about market research in Kolkata.
When customers cross the river for the category, yes. We treat the two banks as linked catchments, not as one undifferentiated city.
No. Parts of the city are value-led. New Town, Salt Lake, and the office corridors support a different spend. The study should say which is which.
Yes. Both are active reasons companies commission work in Kolkata, along with healthcare, manufacturing, and real estate.
By the number of micro-markets, the sample, and whether the work is a site check or a full demand study. There is no single city price.

A single city average will flatter a premium concept in a value market, or undersell a New Town catchment that can support it.
Real Plan Consulting can separate those markets before you fix a price, a site, or a launch plan.
